Our blog, home to advice from your trusted hair experts.

Your Chilliwack hair experts’ advice for prepping your hair for the colder seasons ahead.

Is it getting darker in here or is it just me? As the days get shorter and the leaves start to pile up, many of us get inspired to change our hair to match the mood. Anyone else have the strong urge to go full brunette right about now?

Like clockwork, as the autumn hues outside infiltrate Chilliwack, our clients begin to opt for rich auburns and deep chestnuts in our salon. But how can you transition your hair darker without destroying your strands? And beyond colour, how can you help your hair transition to the fall and winter seasons? Let’s get into it.

Fall Hair Colour Transitions in Chilliwack

Whether you’re dreaming of cozy caramel highlights or a bold burgundy, our Chilliwack hairstylists are here to help bring your inspiration photos to life—but not at the expense of your hair’s health. From the right autumn-inspired hair colours for your skin tone, to non-permanent options and the best professional treatments to prep your hair, we are committed to getting your fall hair transition right.

This is your reminder that the definition of transition is the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. So, trust the process and the period of changing (even if it doesn’t happen in one session). When you book your reservation with any one of our Chilliwack hairstylists at Create Space Hair Co., your visit will start with well…maybe a coffee but then, a consultation. It is during that time you and your stylist will discuss your current hair concerns, look at your inspiration photos and talk about a plan for the day. If your hairstylist does not think your hair can handle a dramatic colour change, they will say no to moving ahead with that plan and suggest alternate ways to get close to the vision you’d like. We prioritize hair health over everything. But don’t fret, there is always a way to compromise.

If your hairstylist agrees that your hair is healthy enough to move ahead with a colour change, for example a coastal blonde to a deep brunette, remember that it may take multiple sessions and require some patience. Avoid drastic colour changes will ultimately protect its integrity and lead to better results over all. If you’re hoping to add a bit of darkness into your hair for the season, but your hair isn’t ready for a full change, our stylists may recommend you start with a trim and a treatment to prepare your hair for the colour. They may also suggest non-permanent colour options or extensions that can help you get the look you are after without compromising your hair’s integrity. How Your Hair Changes in the Fall

As the season shifts into fall, the atmospheric changes bring about noticeable effects on your hair’s condition and structure. The transition to cooler weather directly impacts your hair at a molecular level, influencing its moisture balance, texture, and overall resilience.

Cooler Air Means Drier Hair

In the fall, cooler air holds significantly less moisture compared to the summer months. This reduced humidity creates a drier environment, which leads to a decrease in the water content within the hair shaft. Hair is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs and retains moisture from the surrounding air. However, as the humidity drops, moisture evaporates from the hair more readily, resulting in drier, more brittle strands. This loss of internal moisture affects the flexibility and elasticity of hair, increasing its susceptibility to breakage.

Lower Humidity Sparks Static Buildup

Another effect of the fall season is an increase in static electricity in the hair. As temperatures decline and the air becomes drier, the hair fibers are more likely to carry an electric charge. This happens because the lack of moisture reduces the conductive properties of the hair, allowing static electricity to build up. Hair with a damaged or compromised cuticle layer is especially prone to frizz, as it’s more reactive to static buildup. The result is that individual strands repel one another, leading to a frizzy and flyaway appearance.

Increased Brittleness

Fall weather often brings gustier winds, which can cause physical damage to hair strands. When hair is exposed to wind, the fibers rub against each other, creating friction and potentially lifting the cuticle layer. Once the cuticle layer is disturbed, it compromises the hair’s protective barrier, leaving the inner cortex vulnerable to damage. Since hair is non-living, any damage to the cuticle is permanent, increasing the likelihood of split ends and breakage as the season progresses.

Increased Brittleness Due to Seasonal Changes

With the lower temperatures, hair not only becomes drier but also more brittle. When the hair loses moisture, it also loses flexibility, making it less able to withstand physical stress. This increased brittleness can lead to mechanical breakage, particularly if hair is handled roughly when wet or subjected to excessive styling during the colder months.

We know what you’re thinking: “That all sounds greeeeeeaaaaat, but what do I do about it? We got you.

How To Transition Your Hair Routine For Fall

Even if you’re keeping your hair its natural colour this fall, your hair will still go through a transition. With the impact of the colder weather, there’s a few things our Chilliwack hairstylists recommend to prepare your hair for its healthiest fall and winter:

  • Trim away any summer damage (seriously book in if you haven’t done this already).
  • Avoid brushing or handling your hair while it’s wet—hair tends to be more brittle this time of year, and handling wet hair can lead to breakage.
  • Styling more frequently? Stock up on quality heat protectants and limit how often you use heat to style.
  • Don’t ignore your scalp! Book a 3D scalp analysis to truly figure out what the root of your hair health is calling for.
  • Re-evaluate your current product lineup—your hair is changing alongside the weather, so some steps in your routine might need adjustments, but more on that later…
  • Check your washing schedule. Did summer lead you to an every-other-day routine? Transition back to limiting wash day to every three days min (this of course, varies on the individual).

Fall Hair Products to Integrate

We’ve designed our curated online boutique so that you can shop by your hair’s need, making it easier to find the right product to invest in. From frizz and anti-breakage to moisture and dandruff care, you can see what products our Chilliwack stylists have tested and handpicked for each of these common hair concerns.

The best way to determine the right hair products to elevate your at-home hair routine in between your salon visits is by booking your scalp analysis and product consultation. We use advanced 3D technology to help determine what is going on at the root (literally) of your hair concerns. This allows us to make educated recommendations for your hair type, concern and colour. You can book your scalp analysis here.

In general, we recommend that most of our clients focus on integrating hydration-focused hair products as the weather gets colder. Adding an extra step such as a hydration mask can do wonders to keep frizz, static and breakage at bay. At Create Space Hair Co. in Chilliwack, we carry two product lines: Davines and Kérastase. Both lines offer some incredible professional, at-home hydration masks, so choosing is really based on your personal preference.  Davines takes a totally natural approach using high-quality natural ingredients to formulate their line, while Kérastase relies on the power of science to formulate their products. We actually wrote an entire guide, Why We Carry Two Brands: Kérastase and Davines, to help you determine which brand is right for you. Spoiler alert: There’s no wrong answer and we love both brands equally. It truly comes down to personal preference.

In-Salon Fall Transition Treatments

As the cooler weather arrives, hair often needs a little extra care to adjust. In-salon treatments like Olaplex and Kérastase Fusio-Dose offer targeted solutions that not only prepare hair for the seasonal change but also deliver a level of care that at-home treatments simply can’t match

Olaplex is widely known for its ability to repair and strengthen damaged hair by reconnecting broken disulfide bonds. However, the in-salon treatment offers a higher concentration of active ingredients, delivering a powerful dose of restoration that works at the deepest level. The salon formula is specifically designed to provide intensive repair, making it the ideal treatment for fall, when hair is often recovering from summer sun exposure, chlorine, and other environmental stressors.

At-home Olaplex products, such as the popular No. 3 Hair Perfector, are great for sustaining these results between visits. While they work on the same principle of bond repair, their concentration is lower, allowing for frequent use without overloading the hair. This at-home hair regimen supports the longevity of the salon treatment, keeping hair strong and healthy until your next visit. By combining in-salon and at-home care, clients can maintain the integrity of their hair through the fluctuating seasons.

Kérastase’s Fusio-Dose is a truly adaptable in-salon treatment that can be customized with over 30 unique combinations. Whether hair needs hydration, frizz control, shine, or strength, Fusio-Dose delivers personalized care with precision. This treatment works year-round, but it’s especially effective during the fall transition, as it can be tailored to tackle the specific challenges colder weather brings.

For example, if the cooler air has left hair dry and prone to frizz, the stylist can mix a concentrate for hydration with a booster for anti-frizz benefits. This versatility makes Fusio-Dose a standout treatment that can address multiple concerns in one session, offering immediate, visible results. The micro-emulsion technology ensures that these treatments penetrate deeply into the hair fiber, delivering an instant transformation that’s perfect for the changing season.

While at-home care is essential, the power of professional treatments shouldn’t be underestimated. Our in-salon treatments provide the kind of intensive, long-lasting benefits that simply can’t be replicated at home. Plus, pairing these treatments with a professional blowout ensures that hair not only feels healthier but also looks its best—sleek, smooth, and polished. As we transition into fall, investing in these services can make all the difference in keeping hair resilient, hydrated, and stunning through the seasonal shift.
